Not one single dwelling which can be classified as a “Turkish home” – apart from
dwellings for Sultan and his family – have survived in Anatolian Turkish architecture from the end of the 11th Century to the 17th Century. The oldest buildings from this period are public buildings such as mosques and medreses, and, in a term coined bay Metin Sözen, “the dwellings of the state” which are the palaces. One can detect quarters for the summer and quarters for the winter in these palace complexes. The concept of a summer and winter quarter which dominates these structures dates from the early period (ie. Selchuk and Artuk period) to the 21st Century. The tradition of different housing structures according to seasons and moving from one to the other according to the seasons can be observed from the Selchukid period to the present day. This shift from one location to the other is reminder of summer and winter pastures (yaylak-kışlak), and shows how deep an impression the habit of migration has left on the collective consiciousness. This study reviews the effects of the seasons on Anatolian Turkish architecture.
