The article examines the memoirs of Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha, (1478-1546) who was the commander of Ottoman navy during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, as a common text in literature and history teaching. The memoirs provide colorful and thought provoking materials for college students. The way the author uses the language, the fiction like structure of the memoirs, the multidimensional relations between the head of the navy and rulers in Africa, the decision making process of Barbaros make the memoirs a precious text for teaching Turkish history and literature
