Implementing multiple intelligences theory in foreign language teaching

This study mainly concentrates on the theory of multiple intelligences and deals with the students’ tendency towards various intelligences in foreign language teaching. An inventory has been prepared and administered to the first and fourth year students at Gazi University, Faculty of Education, Foreign Languages Department. The inventory consists of ten statements for each type of intelligence. The results obtained from the students’ inventories have been compared and analyzed. The most favorite and the least preferred intelligence types have been displayed on the graphs. These findings show that no two students have exactly the same profile of intelligences and every student possesses eight different intelligences in varying degrees. Therefore, in foreign language teaching, applying the multiple intelligences theory is crucial both for the teachers and the students. Bu makale, çoklu zeka kuramı doğrultusunda öğrencilerin yabancı dil öğretiminde farklı zeka türlerini ele almaktadır. Bu amaca yönelik geliştirilen anket Gazi Üniversitesi, Eğitim Fakültesi, Yabancı Diller Bölümü, İngilizce Öğretmenliği Programı birinci ve dördüncü sınıflara uygulanmıştır. Anket, her zeka türü için 10 madde içermektedir. Öğrencilere uygulanan anketten elde edilen veriler karşılaştırılıp çözümlenmiştir. En çok ve en az tercih edilen zeka türleri grafiklerle sunulmuştur. Bulgulara dayanarak her öğrencinin değişen düzeylerde farklı zeka türlerine sahip olabildikleri gözlenmiştir. Bu doğrultuda, yabancı dil öğretiminde, çoklu zeka kuramını uygulamak hem öğretmenler hem de öğrenciler için oldukça önem kazanmaktadır.
