Araştırmanın amacı üniversite birinci sınıf öğrencilerinin İstiklal Marşı’ndaki anahtar kelimeleri bilip bilmediklerini belirlemek, bundan hareketle İstiklal Marşı’nın yeterince anlaşılıp anlaşılmadığına yönelik çıkarımlarda bulunmaktır. Çalışma açık uçlu sorulardan oluşan başarı testinin uygulandığı betimsel bir araştırmadır. Başarı testi, eğitim hayatlarını Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen Üniversitesi Eğitim, Fen- Edebiyat ve İslami İlimler Fakültelerinde ve Meslek Yüksek Okulunda devam ettiren üç yüz birinci sınıf öğrencisine uygulanmıştır. Araştırmanın sonunda uzman görüşünden hareketle oluşturulan İstiklal Marşı’ndaki anahtar kelimelerin % 33.8’inin bilindiği, % 66.1’inin bilinmediği belirlenmiş; bu veriden hareketle İstiklal Marşı’nın yeterince anlaşılamadığı ifade edilmiştir. Araştırmada, ayrıca, ilk iki kıtanın kelimelerinin bilinme oranının sonraki kıtalardaki kelimelerin bilinme oranından daha yüksek olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Diğer bir ifadeyle öğrencilerin haftada iki kez okudukları ilk iki kıtadaki kelimeleri şiirin diğer bölümlerindeki kelimelerden daha iyi bildikleri tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmanın son bölümünde milletin ideallerini içinde barındırması yönüyle milletin yaşantılarından, ortak paydalarından doğmuş, millet olma bilincini en derin şekliyle hissettiren en önemli değerlerden biri olan İstiklal Marşı’ndaki kelimelerin daha iyi öğrenilmesi ve marşın yeterince anlaşılması için eğitim kurumlarında marşın on kıtasının bütüncül bir bakış açısıyla daha sık ele alınması, eğitim/basın kurumlarının marşla ilgili hazırladığı veya hazırlayacağı cd’ler, marşın anlamı ile ilgili olarak basında yer alan haber nitelikli yazılar gibi çeşitli görsel-işitsel araçlardan faydalanılması gerektiği ifade edilmiştir.

The purpose of this study is to find out whether or not the freshman students of the university know the key words of Turkish National Anthem and from that point of view, to elicit whether or not the National Anthem is understood adequately. The study is a descriptive research where success test consisting of open-ended questions was applied. The success test was administered to three hundred freshman students attending Faculties of Education, Letter and Islamic Sciences and Vocational High School of Agri Ibrahim Cecen University. Based on expert opinion, at the end of the study it was discovered that 33.8% knew the key words of National Anthem while those not knowing them are 66.1% and based on this datum it has been argued that the Turkish National Anthem has not been understood adequately. In the study, it was also discovered that the rate of knowing the key words in the first two stanzas is higher than the rate of knowing the key words in the other stanzas. In other words, it has been discovered that the students know the words in the first two stanzas sung twice every week, better than knowing the words in other stanzas of the poem. In the last part of the study, considering that the anthem contains ideals of the nation and being one of the most important assets providing the individuals to feel the consciousness of being nation arising out of experiences of the nation and becoming common points of the nation, it has been stated that the National Anthem should be dealt with at educational institutes more entirely with ten stanzas through an integral point of view so as to learn the words and understand the anthem better by use of various audio-visual aids such as CDs about the Anthem prepared or to be prepared by educational/press institutes and articles of news nature published in the media regarding the meaning of the Anthem.
